Saga, Arashiyamaarea is famous for its beautiful scenery in different seasons. It became prosperous around the 10th century as many nobles had their own villas. The 154-meter Togetsukyo Bridge spans the Katsura River that flows through Saga Arashiyama. It is said that when Emperor Kameyama visited the area, he looked at the moon slowly passing over the bridge and left a poem "The night sky is like water washing, and the bright moon is like crossing the bridge", so the bridge was renamed Togetsukyo Bridge. On the north side of the bamboo forest path, the houses on the street seem to show the comings and goings of residents in the past, and the tranquil scene in front of you can soothe the heart of the emperor at that time. The Saga Arashiyama area used to be a hunting ground exclusively for the royal family and the court officials. The imperial palace built by Emperor Saga here was later converted into a temple called Daikakuji Temple, where the royal family members served as the abbot for generations, and it has been preserved to this day.
●Arashiyama Bamboo Forest Trail Located in Sagano Village west of Kyoto, the trail is not long, but it is enough for you to feel the beauty of the bamboo forest. The mottled light and shadows fall on the forest floor, as if there is an incredible magic. To fully appreciate this unique landscape, please enter the bamboo forest from the side door of Tenryuji Temple.
●Tenryuji Temple A temple built by Ashikaga Takauji to pray for the soul of Emperor Go-Daigo. The "Sogen Pond Garden", one of the world cultural heritage sites, was designed by Muso Kokushi (a monk of the Rinzai sect) about 700 years ago. It borrows the scenery of Kameyama and Arashiyama, and shows different charms with the flow of the four seasons, attracting countless people to come and enjoy. In addition, Tenryuji Temple has many attractions such as the giant dragon "Cloud Dragon Picture" painted on the ceiling of the Dharma Hall. Outside the north gate of Tenryuji Temple, there is a bamboo forest trail. It is said that in the Heian period, this place was once the location of the nobles' villa. On sunny days, the sun pours down through the leaves, making people feel relaxed.
●Former Saga Imperial Palace, Daihonzan Daikakuji Temple Originally, it was built by Emperor Saga, one of the three great calligraphers in Japan. It was later converted into a temple and is one of the temples with successive emperors and royal family members serving as abbots. It is recommended to experience Buddhist activities such as copying scriptures and drawing Buddha statues. The "Shinden-zukuri" style of the Shinden and the elegant flower and bird paintings on the "Sudden Corridor" are also worth seeing.
●Kano Nenbutsuji Temple Walking west from Daikakuji Temple, you can see Atago Street with stone steps. Further north of this road, maple trees are planted on both sides of the stone steps, as if beckoning you to the Kano Nenbutsuji Temple. This area used to be a place for wind burials, and the nunnery built to collect corpses was the predecessor of the Kano Nenbutsuji Temple. There is a small bamboo forest path behind the temple, and you can enjoy the quiet beauty of the bamboo forest by walking along it.
●Gioji Temple Gioji Temple is a quiet place, located at the corner where Atago Street turns into the mountains. It is surrounded by low fences, but it is worth visiting. Whether it is the tragedy of the white-beat dance girl Gio or the seasonal garden scenery created by moss and red leaves, they all tell the aesthetic concept of the Japanese nation.
●Atago Nenbutsu Temple At the end of Atago Street, there is Atago Nenbutsu Temple, which has become a popular tourist attraction in recent years. When Atago Nenbutsu Temple was moved from its abandoned original site to its current location, everyone responded to the call of the former abbot who was a Buddhist statue carving craftsman and jointly carved more than 1,200 Arhat statues with unique expressions and placed them in the temple.
●Sanzen-in Temple A representative temple in the Ohara area. The stone landscape in the courtyard gives people the feeling of a castle, and the high standards are impressive. The courtyard is covered with moss and the fir and cypress trees are lush and green, creating a sense of beauty that seems out of this world.
